Diamondback HD Truck Bed Cover Review

No room left on the trailer for a kayak? Bring all of your toys along for the adventure with Diamondback's new HD truck bed cover. (Lance Schwartz/) I have been a die-hard Diamondback truck bed cover fan for many years.

In fact, out of all the aftermarket parts I've ever put on any of my vehicles, the Diamondback bed cover has been at the top of my list as far as usefulness, durability, and added value. My original Diamondback, which I still own, is a Diamondback HD ATV cover. I've used it to haul countless ATVs, as well as plenty of other random materials, and I have loved it every step of the way.

Since I acquired my original cover a number of years ago, Diamondback has made a ton of incremental improvements along the way that have enabled its cover design to evolve.

When I was approached about trying out one of the new covers, I couldn't wait to see the improvements--of which I discovered there are many. My cover arrived at a trucking terminal on a Friday, but they couldn't do final delivery to my door until the following Monday. I couldn't wait until Monday, so I showed up at the trucking terminal to pick it up.

It was strapped nicely to a pallet. However, when the forklift driver approached my truck, he was very hesitant when I told him to load the pallet on top of my current Diamondback ATV cover. What he didn't realize is that the cover is capable of holding up to 1,600 pounds of whatever you can stack on it.

After a little encouragement that "it would be OK," he agreed to put the pallet on my Diamondback cover. He smiled, still a bit confused, but managed to comment about how cool he thought the cover was. When I told him there was a shiny new Diamondback in the box strapped to the pallet, he just started laughing.

Yep! I was hauling a Diamondback with my Diamondback.

Load Error Since my old Diamondback cover was set up for hauling ATVs, I wanted to try something new this time around.

Like most families, we use my truck as a do-it-all family vehicle. The truck spends time hauling ATVs in it, on it, and towed behind it. It also spends a great deal of time towing our boat, hauling mountain bikes, toting dirt bikes, and transporting our fishing kayaks.

It has always been able to handle one of those tasks at a time well, but my goal was to have a truck that can haul/tow multiple things at the same time. When we tow our boat back and forth to the beach, we wanted the capability of also taking our fishing kayaks or mountain bikes as well. In the past, this had been basically impossible.

Hauling mountain bikes or fishing kayaks when we're also towing an ATV trailer has been tough too.

Diamondback teamed up with Yakima for countless ways to accessorize its truck covers. (Lance Schwartz/) Now, with our new Diamondback HD with an integrated Yakima base track mounted to the bed, I have all of Yakima's accessories available at my fingertips. We opted for a Yakima OutPost HD, to which I mounted 68-inch crossbars and a pair of Yakima JayLow kayak carriers.

Each JayLow can carry two kayaks, giving me the ability to take along four kayaks with either my boat, ATV trailer, or Saris mountain bike rack in the rear hitch. It is honestly an amazing setup not only capable of epic adventures, but now modular enough to add more Yakima accessories when I find something else I want to bring along for the adventure.

On top of all of the hauling capability, I also get secure, dry storage for whatever I put in the bed. Whether I'm toting around riding gear, tools, or travel gear for a family vacation, I know that I can count on all of it being securely locked in the bed of my truck.

In addition to the Yakima equipment, I got a MOLLE mount, a set of Diamondback LED lights to mount under the cover, and a gaggle of Quick Fist clamps to mount tools, lights, guns, or whatever I choose to the MOLLE panel. It also has some really nice bins that mount under the cover that I may consider adding in the future.

It has also given me the ability to haul a considerable amount of weight on top of the cover. Additionally, with the collaboration between Diamondback and Yakima, my truck now has the capability of having "multiple personalities" on any given day, allowing me to transport whatever type of gear, supplies, or toys I need to get the job--or the fun--done!
